The winner of a raffle will recieve a 21-foot outboard boat. If 1000 raffle tickets were sold and you purchased 20 tickets, what are the odds against your winning the boat?

    There are 1000 tickets total, 20 of which are yours and 980 of which are not. So your odds in winning are 980 to 20, which reduces to 49:1.

    The probability that you don’t win (odds against your winning) is
    980/ 1000 Since you don’t have 980 of the raffles.
    This simplies to 49/50
    But this is probability, to get the odds, we subtract the denominator by the numerator.
    49 / (50 – 49) to get 49/1
    Hence, the odds against you winning the boat is 49 to 1
