Need fundraising suggestions?

I am the President of a High School Volleyball Booster Club. Sad to say, there is not much parent involvement. Please provide fundraising suggestions for the couple parents which are willing to work along with the athletes. This is the first year we are getting organized to support the athletes. Last year, two parents did everything to financially support the team. We will be doing car washes, candy sales, a gas raffle, and a community garage sale. Does anyone have any big money suggestions? We need to raise close to $10,000 annually. This team competes at the State level.

Bake Sales, 50/50 drawings, Raffles on gift certificates, have some one make up a basket of bath items, one wiht school supplies, one with food food, etc.
People will buy raffle tickets on just about anything.

Ask for $$$ donations explaining what the $$ is for.

Setup a golf tournament in your area. Work out a deal with the local golf course to give you a discount on the rates and anything extra can go to your cause. You can have a raffle at the tournament to raise more money. Also, you an do a long drive contest. $10 to hit a ball winner gets 70% of the winnings, the rest goes toward your charity. There are all kinds of things you can do while your at the event.

The number one way to get money with the least effort and expense on your part is to stick out your hand and ask for it.

Skip the bake sales. You’d get more money if the contributors just gave you the price of the ingredients, plus a quarter for the electricity or gas they’ll save not baking. Adults washing cars for teenagers’ groups looks lame–public car washing is a kids’ activity., have them do it, if you must. The raffle and garage sale are okay if you don’t have any problems with gambling addiction in your areas. (Yes, even a raffle ticket can be a “starter drug.”)

Find everyone in your area or from your area who ever played volleyball competitively. Use Google, myspace, facebook, the high school annuals–we’re in high tech now and you’re using 50 year-old fund-raising techniques. Don’t neglect any colleges in your state that have varsity or even intramural volleyball. Find their players, coaches, and the intramural department at the college that sponsors them. (This department has great on-campus jobs for students that can score-keep and referee for games–just a future thought. It isn’t an athletic scholarship, but the work is lots less demanding.) This is where the kids can, should, and might want to help.

Work up a really good donor request letter and email all prospects (write if you can’t get an email address), explaining what you need the money for. If you have phone numbers, include a line that one of the team members or parents will be calling “in the next few days” to answer any questions they may have.

Let contributors vote about whether they’d rather come to an exhibition game that the team does or be put together for their own team of “veterans” to compete against your team. If the school allows, offer contributors (either at a certain money level or by random drawing) free admission to a set number of your team’s competitions. (Shoot, if attendance is usually low, offer them all tickets.) Even if admisison is always free, offer to send them a schedule and acknowledge them in some way before or during the game.

If you want to sell a fundraising product, sell fundraising cards offering free pizzas each time you buy one. They cost $1 to $2 each and retail for $10. Choose from Papa Johns, Dominos, or Pizza Hut.

They are good for one year and for up to 20 free pizzas, so they are a great deal for the buyer.

Sell them at tables outside grocery stores, Home Depot, Wal-Mart, etc. on Saturday. Divide your team up and work four locations. Make particpation mandatory and have everyone work in 2-hour shifts.

Another good idea for fast profits is to do a raffle. Big cash prizes work best, but you can also do well with prizes like big screen TVs, etc. Sell your raffle tickets the same way you do the fundraising pizza cards (outside high-traffic retail locations).
